33 years of US... and counting!

    22 June 2026
A 6 minute read by Tom Bloxham CBE MBE

This summer we celebrate more than three decades of placemaking! A time we've spent transforming communities and delivering over 6,000 homes and 2 million sq ft of workspace across the country.

In this birthday blog we explore our highlights – from out latest film made to celebrate our 30+ years spent regenerating towns and cities across the UK, to a collection of 33 images showcasing brilliant projects from over the years.

Our 33-year commitment to regeneration comes to life in our latest film – a compelling snapshot of three decades transforming communities up and down the country. Watch it below or read on as we hone in on some of the best bits...

Places to live, work and play

We've created some brilliantly designed neighbourhoods across the country. From Royal William Yard in Plymouth to  Smith's Dock in North Shields, and large-scale developments like Port Loop in Birmingham, New Islington in Manchester, and the Ropewalks in Liverpool.

2 million sq ft of workspace

Businesses want adaptable, flexible spaces that meet today's evolving work culture. We've done that by creating more than 2 million sq ft of workspace and continuously reinvesting to ensure they meet current business needs. Our spaces blend brilliant design with original features – from Matchworks in South Liverpool with its art deco heart, to Boat Shed in Salford Quays with reimagined 90s office architecture, to rejuvenated Ancoats mills like Waulk Mill and Beehive Mill, plus our newest workspace, Brewhouse Arcade in Plymouth.

    Architectural icons

We've reimagined British architectural icons whilst respecting their original character. Park Hill in Sheffield – a brutalist icon twice shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, with more new homes coming here later this year. Lakeshore – a Le Corbusier-inspired former factory transformed into homes. Rotunda in central Birmingham.

    Placemaking through art

We've always been enthusiastic art pushers and committed design junkies, because pioneering creatives deliver intangible value to the places they inhabit. For over three decades, we've collaborated with artists and designers to feature their works within our buildings and communities.

    Placemaking through events

Events bring our communities to life. Royal William Yard perfectly demonstrates this – from monthly farmers' markets and paddle events on the water, to art trails and Illuminate (an art event that literally lit up the buildings), plus welcoming a giant squid installation!

    Award-winning work

We're proud to have won nearly 500 awards for our architecture, design and regeneration efforts over the past three decades. Our biggest accolades include 60 from RIBA for buildings like Stubbs Mill in Manchester, Park Hill in Sheffield, Chimney Pot Park in Salford and Fort Dunlop in Birmingham.
