65 years of Park Hill
This June marks 65 years of Park Hill; 65 years since the building was complete as a utopian vision of urban living by architects Jack Lynn and Ivor Smith with its distinctive streets in the sky and Brutalist design.
Six and a half decades on, the building is far from entering its retirement. With three completed phases, the penultimate phase currently on site and planning approval secured for the final phase, Development Manager Sian Stanhope explains how we’re celebrating the past and paving the way for the future of Park Hill.

The original vision
“Park Hill has been on quite the journey over the years. First completed in 1961 in an era of post-war housing shortages in Sheffield, the Brutalist structure stood proudly overlooking Sheffield city centre. Inspired by Le Corbusier’s Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, architects Jack Lynn and Ivor Smith worked to create a ‘vertical village’ combining housing with amenities on the ground floor.

“Thriving in the 60s and 70s with a tight-knit community, the building entered a period of decline in the 90s and early noughties with homes sparsely occupied and known for anti-social behaviour. Recognising Park Hill as an architectural icon and believing in the possibility of reestablishing a lively, connected community, Urban Splash took on the development in the mid-noughties.”

Restoring an icon
“Working alongside Historic England and architects Hawkins\Brown and Studio Egret West to sensitively restore the building back to its former glory, the first phase included 260 mixed tenure homes and 30,00 sq ft of workspace. Phase 1 set the standard for how the building could be viably brought back to life, from restoring its listed concrete frame, to incorporating contemporary design features to make it fit for modern occupiers.

“Since the initial transformation works on Phase 1, we’ve worked with our joint venture partners Places for People to create further phases alongside designers Mikhail Riches and Whittam Cox Architects. To date, there are 455 new homes, accommodation for 356 students and more than 50,000 sq ft of workspace, reestablishing the building as a place to live, work and belong.”

More than a building
“The community is truly what makes Park Hill so special. Over the last 65 years, it has grown into a place shaped by countless people, each with their own story to tell. From our very first residents in Phase 1 (our early adopters, as it were) to those who are set to join us in future phases, every generation brings something new.

“Park Hill is a place with bags of lived experience – not just in the fabric of the building, but the memories and moments shared by everyone who has called it home, worked here, or simply passed through. With each new phase, new home and new workspace, Park Hill continues to evolve into a neighbourhood in its own right, recognised both through the stories of those who know and love it and through its 39 awards.”

The penultimate chapter
“We’re currently on site delivering 125 new homes to Park Hill alongside public green space, EV charging and bike storage. We’re working again with architects, Mikhail Riches, who will be taking lessons from the Stirling Prize shortlisted Phase 2 to refine and improve designs for our future residents.
“Each home in the latest phase will have all the Park Hill perks – dual-aspect design, raw concrete character and plenty of light and space throughout. With three phases already complete at the development, our new residents will be joining the thriving community here with places to eat, drink and shop on site.

“The next 65 years of Park Hill are set to be as full of life, character and rich history as the last. This is a building that has always evolved with its community, and the new phase is the next chapter in that story. We’re proud to be shaping a future alongside our partners Places for People that honours Park Hill’s past while creating homes and spaces that will continue its legacy for generations to come.”
