Scores queue for Limited Edition Park Hill homes
Crowds of Sheffielders queued in the autumnal sunshine at Park Hill this weekend, ready to secure one of a new Limited Edition collection of homes at the Grade II listed building.
Joint venture partners Urban Splash and Places for People gave buyers a penultimate chance to become part of Park Hill’s story on Saturday, with 20 customers forming a queue in the early hours – the first of them arriving at the building at 11.30pm on Friday night.
Customers queued early, eager to reserve specific apartment types, including one who reserved a four-bedroom home – the only four-bedroom property to ever be created at the building. Guy Ackerley of the JV, and Urban Splash's Managing Director of Development and Residential, explained: "What a fantastic day. It was really encouraging to see so many people – of all ages and backgrounds – queue up ready to secure their home. That's testament to the strength of Park Hill: its rich history, the calibre of the design, and everything the building has to offer.
"This is a building that has played a huge part in Sheffield, and we are delighted to have met its future residents today."
This newest phase comes following £6.4m support from the Government's housing agency Homes England earlier this year, unlocking the creation of 125 new homes ranging from two- to four-bedrooms. Of these, 30 are affordable and will be marketed by Great Places, with the joint venture releasing the remaining 95 homes in a series of exclusive drops.
The homes are designed by long-term Park Hill architects Mikhail Riches, whose work on the second phase was nominated for the 2024 Stirling Prize. All of the apartments feature raw, exposed concrete, a celebration of the building's original fabric - plus a balcony and coloured balcony cheeks. Homes also come with dual aspect views, duplex living, private balconies and access to the building's communal gardens, all within an award-winning architectural icon.
Park Hill is a Brutalist concrete icon and the largest Grade II listed building in Europe. Standing proudly at the top of the hill overlooking Sheffield city centre, the building was completed in 1961 as a bold, optimistic vision for modern urban living. Its distinctive "streets in the sky" - wide walkways outside each home, designed to be big enough for a milk float to pass - became vibrant social spaces where neighbours became friends and community life flourished.
In the years since, Urban Splash and Places for People have created green and community spaces, 455 homes, all of which are occupied, and accommodation for 356 students, alongside amenities including a bar, café, nursery and shop.
The first phase was also nominated for the Stirling Prize in 2013, having been designed by architects Studio Egret West and Hawkins\Brown. This current, fourth phase is onsite now, for completion in 2027, and is being delivered by GMI Construction. Alongside the new homes, it will bring new green spaces, EV charging and bike storage to the community.
The remaining homes in this phase are now available, with prices from £187,500.
