Customer profiles - Trident Gyms, Matchworks
Trident Gyms has built a reputation for redefining the modern training space, combining premium 24/7 facilities with a vibrant, community-driven atmosphere. After building a series of award-winning gyms in the South West, Trident Gyms founder Craig Stephens has opened a new space at Matchworks in Speke, Liverpool.

Warming up
“I’ve been a member of many different gyms over the years and found that many fell short – the boutique gyms with tight-knit communities were often expensive, while the larger gyms didn’t offer enough equipment variety. I wanted to create a space where people could train how and when they wanted, with the best standard of equipment, in an environment where they genuinely felt valued.
“I opened our first gym in Bridgwater, Somerset, in 2019, converting a warehouse unit with my brother and eldest son into the very first Trident Gym. Our tagline is ‘All at Trident’, and it has a double meaning: Trident is for everyone, and we offer everything a member could possibly need. I sourced equipment from a specialist supplier in Germany to guarantee the highest standards and set the opening hours to 24/7 so people could train on their own terms.
“We grew from 80 members to more than 350 in a short space of time, which led me to expand into the unit next door. Doubling the footprint allowed us to add a boxing ring and broaden our facilities even further. It was amazing to see the community continue to flourish as the space grew.”

Setting the pace
“After Bridgwater, we opened three more gyms in the South West – Yeovil, Weston-Super-Mare, and Plymouth – all built around the same level of service, community, and facilities that had defined our first site. Whether it was all-day DJ events, monthly competitions, or fundraising efforts, we always looked for ways to bring our members together and keep everyone motivated.
“For our next gym, we wanted to look beyond the South West and explore opportunities in the North. That’s what brought us to Matchworks in Speke, Liverpool. As soon as I walked into the space, I knew it was the right fit. The energy of Matchworks aligned perfectly with the Trident brand, and I could immediately see how a high-quality fitness and wellness space would benefit the local community.”

Making an impact
“Liverpool is our biggest site to date, marking a huge milestone for Trident. Each floor of the gym is dedicated to a different type of training to maximise space and accessibility. We’ve got weights and plate-loaded machinery on the first floor, pin-loaded machines and cardio on the second floor, and a functional training zone on the third floor for CrossFit and Hyrox-style workouts. We’ve also installed a sauna and a cryotherapy chamber to support recovery.
“We had 480 members signed up before we even opened our doors, which was a huge vote of confidence. Our General Manager, Craig, has been incredible too – he worked in the gym previously on site here so he’s well-known around the area, so it’s nice for our new members to still have a familiar face.
“We’ve also expanded into supplements and clothing, all available at Matchworks, so our members have access to everything they need in one place. The Liverpool site truly captures what Trident stands for: 24/7 access, top-tier equipment, and a friendly, supportive community.”

Stepping up
“We’ve had a brilliant start since opening in September. It’s been a busy period, and we’re already approaching 1,000 members. So many people have told us how great it is to have the space open again and to have somewhere welcoming to train locally.
“Matchworks is the perfect location for us. There’s a large business community on site, with lots of people choosing to train before or after work. The gym isn’t just a place to exercise; it’s becoming a community hub where people connect, network, and feel part of something.
“The flexibility of the spaces provided by Urban Splash, along with the support from the team, made opening our Liverpool site incredibly smooth. I’m really looking forward to what the future holds at Matchworks – continuing to add value to the community and doing what we do best.”
