        Taking engagement to new heights

        01 August 2025
A 4 minute read by Amy Dowse

Our company purpose is: “We will leave this place not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was left to us”. This purpose guides the way we do business, but also how we support and invest in our people.

Creating neighbourhoods and communities that bring people together starts with our own teams. In this blog, our People Partner, Amy Dowse, explains how employee engagement plays a key role in our business and how our latest get-together at The Climbing Hangar at Matchworks, in South Liverpool was an opportunity to put that into practice.

        Embedding engagement

“At its heart, employee engagement is about creating the right conditions for people to do their best work every day. It’s our responsibility to create a workplace where our colleagues feel connected, motivated and supported.

“We’ve embedded this thinking across our people strategy, from our People Manager Programme to Insights Team Effectiveness and everything in between. We’re giving our colleagues the tools to better understand themselves and each other – how they communicate, where they thrive and how they can work more efficiently together.”

        Bringing people together

“One of the ways we make space for connection and reflection is through our quarterly company-wide meet ups. They’re a key part of our business strategy and a great way to take people out of their day-to-day environment so they can see the bigger picture, hear from other teams and engage with colleagues they might not usually cross paths with.

“Everything we do is tied to our purpose. We don’t put on sessions for the sake of it – we think about why we’re doing it, what people will get from it and how it links back to the business. Our staff meetings are designed so our colleagues leave having learnt something new and feeling energised and connected.”

        Reaching new heights

“Our most recent staff quarterly saw us bouldering at The Climbing Hangar at Matchworks in South Liverpool. Not only is it a brilliant venue, but it also served as an opportunity for our colleagues to visit one of the sites in our commercial portfolio and see our buildings and its occupiers in action.

        Urban Splash CEO Julian Curnuck

“We kicked things off with a business update from our CEO, Julian Curnuck, followed by an inspiring keynote from our Director of the Future, Suzy Jones. After that, it was time to gear up and head to the climbing wall in groups. It was fantastic to see everyone cheering each other on and stepping out of their comfort zones.

“Events like this leave a lasting impact and go a long way in contributing to wellbeing and connection, which is what meaningful engagement is all about.”

        Committing to continuous improvement

“We’ve never seen engagement as a static goal; we’re constantly reviewing, questioning and improving, whether it’s the benefits we offer, the events we run or the development opportunities we create.

“It’s all about helping people understand what they’re doing, why it matters and how they can grow. That sense of purpose is central to everything we do and it’s just as important inside our business as it is in the wider communities we create.”
