        Meet US - 5 minutes with Bethany Gradwell

        From rolling out new initiatives to responding to internal feedback, our People team support all areas of the business to ensure everyone at Urban Splash loves the work they do and has the support they need to thrive.

        We spoke to People Partner, Bethany Gradwell, to find out more about her journey so far, what makes her role so varied and the impact the team is having across the business.

        Supporting the people who shape our places

        “I joined Urban Splash a little over four years ago after completing my masters in Human Resource Management at the University of Liverpool. As People Partner, my role is to support the business in achieving its goals from a people and culture perspective.

        “I work with our Development and Central Services departments, regularly meeting with leaders to understand what they’re working towards and how we can best support them. Our job is to make sure they have the right tools and systems in place to succeed – whether that’s recruitment, talent development, succession planning or day-to-day people support.

        “We’re known externally for our regeneration and placemaking projects, but internally we’re just as focused on giving colleagues the tools, support and development they need to deliver on our schemes. Our efforts were highlighted recently at the Business Desk North West Awards when we were named Property Business of the Year and praised for our commitment to innovation.”

        Never standing still

        “You see real value when you keep striving for continuous improvement. A lot of my time is spent turning feedback from our annual People Survey and regular conversations with leaders into practical actions that make a difference. We are always evolving initiatives based on what matters to colleagues, not only what we think is best.

        “Our work often focuses on long-term cultural development, such as implementing the Personal Development Plan process and People Managers Programme, which we design in-house tailored to our Urban Splash colleagues. The People Managers Programme is a structured development journey which covers all the foundational aspects of people management, from the practical side of areas such as recruitment and performance management to the soft skills needed for leadership. Designed and delivered by the People team, the programme reflects our culture and values, and gives managers and colleagues the confidence and skills to lead teams effectively and support career growth.

        “Continuous improvement also applies to us as People Partners. My colleague Amy Dowse and I are both trained as Insights Discovery Client Practitioners, which allows us to deliver tailored sessions which are relevant and practical for our internal teams, rather than relying on external trainers. This internal expertise on Insights doesn’t just enhance standalone sessions, it complements initiatives like the Personal Development Plan process by helping colleagues understand their own preferences and strengths. By weaving these insights into development conversations and programmes, we make sure every step of the journey delivers meaningful value for individuals and teams.”

        “Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the initiatives we’ve implemented genuinely improve people’s experience at work. Awards and nominations are great, but what matters most is that we’re creating a workplace that supports colleagues, helps them do their best work, and makes a real, lasting impact.

        “We’re always refining what matters, bringing the same focus on innovation as we apply to the buildings and neighbourhoods we create. I’m looking forward to continuing to find ways the People team can support the business as our pipeline continues to grow, ensuring that our people remain at the heart of everything we do.”
