Customer profiles – L19 Fitness, Matchworks
For many people, fitness is more than just a workout – it’s about community, motivation and finding a space where you can challenge yourself. That’s the ethos behind L19 Fitness – a boutique studio based at Matchworks in Speke, South Liverpool.
We spoke to L19 Fitness founder, Mark Tinwell, about where the inspiration for the studio came from, why he chose Matchworks to base the business and what he’s got in store for L19 Fitness in the future.

A passion for fitness
“The gym has always been a massive part of my life – I’ve worked within gyms and the fitness industry for the best part of 30 years, since I was a teenager. It’s always been a positive outlet for me, and I’ve loved having the privilege to share this with others as a personal trainer.
“I’ve always found that the best results come when people feel comfortable and supported. I’ve always been drawn to smaller, studio-style setups and I knew that if I ever opened my own gym, it would be that kind of environment.”

Taking the leap
“Towards the end of 2025 I took the plunge and decided to set up L19 Fitness. Named after our postcode, I wanted L19 Fitness to become a likeminded community of people who wanted to hybrid train and see real results while being supported by brilliant trainers.
“I’ve lived locally to Matchworks for a long time and have seen the business community that has been created by Urban Splash. When I was looking for space to open L19 Fitness, I knew Matchworks could offer the kind of environment I was looking for.
“Of the spaces available at the time, there was one clear winner for me. Our space is in the Matchworks One building right at the very front of the development with dual-aspect windows which flood the space with light – something you don’t get in many gyms. The size was spot on for what I wanted to create, and the availability of customer parking made it a no brainer.”

Designed for performance
“The design and layout of the gym have been well considered – we needed to balance having a variety of equipment without it feeling crowded, and I do think we’ve managed to achieve that. We’ve gone with a dark aesthetic which is well balanced by the natural light we get into the studio.
“We focus on functional and hybrid fitness training styles – a combination of cardio using our ski ergs, bikes and rowing machines, and then bodyweight and weighted exercises. We have around 30 classes timetabled each week led by our team of trainers, as well as private PT sessions.
“Whether people are just starting out or looking to push themselves further, our trainers focus on delivering real results. All our classes are adaptable to different fitness levels and capabilities, so our members feel comfortable and supported throughout their sessions. L19 Fitness is also an affiliate for Deadly Dozen and DEKA, which allows us to host competitions and training sessions recognised by these organisations.”

Levelling up
“We’ve had a really positive start to our L19 Fitness journey at Matchworks. From finding the space to starting to grow our community, everything has gone from strength to strength. I’m looking forward to our future here – welcoming more members, hosting competitions and establishing L19 Fitness as a leader in hybrid training in South Liverpool. I think we’re going to be very busy!”
