Talking Manchester at MIPIM 2026
I attended my 34th MIPIM last month - a brilliant chance to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. The annual property festival in Cannes always brings together many imaginative minds from public and private sectors to share ideas, debate trends and explore collaboration across the built-environment sector.
I was fortunate to be invited to speak at several events, including a light-hearted closing session on the UK stand titled “A Tale of Two Northern Cities: Regeneration, Renewal and Diverging Paths,” alongside architect and TV presenter George Clarke.

Using Manchester and Sunderland as case studies, we examined how UK cities navigate change and why regeneration journeys can diverge. I reflected on more than three decades of transformation in Manchester at places like Castlefield and New Islington, while George shared insights from Sunderland’s earlier-stage renewal. Together we discussed the drivers of successful regeneration, common barriers, and the practical lessons other cities can draw from these two northern examples.

Earlier in the week I also spoke on the Manchester stand about CyanLines - our ambitious plan to link and transform Manchester’s green and blue spaces.

CyanLines launched last autumn and aims to create a network of over 100 miles connecting squares, pocket parks, rivers, canals, viaducts and proposed linear parks. The vision is to provide traffic-free walking and cycling routes, bridge gaps with new connections across Manchester and Salford city centres, and link into the wider Greater Manchester boroughs so residents and visitors can better enjoy, understand and connect with nature and each other.

Both sessions, and the many conversations between them, made for a busy but productive MIPIM. I left energised by the ideas and partnerships taking shape, a pocket full of new contacts to follow up on and excited to continue the work back home.
