Home is where the Art is

    24 November 2020

Culture is not only the integration of the visible expressions of art, but also the things that help connect us all. Art and culture should be at the heart of every neighbourhood. It’s what connects people to the area; the shared values, history and hopes for the future.

To put it simply, embracing an area’s culture is incredibly important and something which we take very seriously at Urban Splash.

So much so that, at our Port Loop neighbourhood in Birmingham, we have introduced the city’s first Art House. So, what’s an Art House? Good question and one that we feel is best answered by MAIA Group, the new residents of YARD.

YARD at Port Loop in Birmingham

“YARD is an Art House that creates safe and joyful places for us to come together. A place to vibe, laugh, create, question and celebrate what home is, what it means to us and how we build home together.

“YARD will act as a neighbourhood forum for some of the best international and local artistry, performers, musicians and poets from across the world. We want to embrace debate and discussion on, and around all the things that do and could make our city great for the communities who live here, through the arts.”

Last month, MAIA moved into one of our three storey Town Houses at Port Loop, with the team currently getting the space ready for the first artists to move in and the first events to take place (Covid restrictions allowing). At any one time, YARD will be home to three resident artists who will live on the top floors of the house. The ground floor of YARD will include art and community space which will be open to Port Loop residents and the wider community, with a regular timetable of events. These events will range from yoga classes to artist workshops, roundtable discussions, cook outs, live music and poetry nights. Sounds great, doesn’t it?!

It’s our aim, that all of our developments will be home to some form of Art House in the future. Having an Art House at Port Loop was made possible with the support of Urban Splash Charitable Trust and Urban Splash Residential Fund. Watch this space for YARD’s first schedule of events which is due to be announced very soon!
